The Modern Languages Department requires three terms of either French or Spanish in Forms II through Form V. Form VI French and Spanish are electives. Mandarin is offered as a replacement for French or Spanish in Forms IV-VI. The department offers an AP course in French Language and in Spanish Language.
The goals of the Modern Languages Department at each level are to help students develop to the best of their ability the four interrelated skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing, and also to expose them to the culture, and later the literature of the language.
The target language is used almost exclusively in the classroom in order to create an immersion experience; literature selections and video and audio materials supplement texts. We emphasize a thorough understanding of the structure of the language, and we provide a variety of ways for the student to practice and develop skills.
