AMC Newsletter March 2016

April 2016

Message from the President

Dear Alumni Moms,

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter with your loved ones. Our family was blessed to have everyone home for brunch. The grandchildren are always the highlight of any event. There was a line to hold Leo, and Joseph loved the Easter egg hunt! He quickly caught on that the eggs had goodies. When Joseph would find an egg, he would throw it to the ground to release the hidden treasures. Of course, all of the boys thought it was funny and cheered him on throughout his hunt. The whole family was eagerly watching his every move as memories of Easters past flooded my heart while forming new Easter memories. It is so wonderful to see the circle of life before your eyes! Our children and grandchildren are our greatest blessings and gifts from Our Heavenly Father!

paintingThe first Priory Painting Party was last night (April 7th)! Just as no two fingerprints are alike, no two paintings are alike. Many AMC members enjoyed a fun evening in the Junior School Art Studio creating a one of a kind masterpiece with friends! Look for an event recap in next month’s newsletter.

Spring is in the air with all of the beautiful blooming trees and flowers, the birds are busy making their nests and people are migrating outdoors. Audrey Altepeter and Pattie Schafer were busy digging in the dirt at the Switzer House cleaning and planting in the flower beds. Check the newsletter for upcoming opportunities to Dig in the Dirt with Audrey. The Resurrection of Jesus marks the rebirth of nature and the wonders of our beautiful world and life!

Did you get your Mothers’ Club Spring Luncheon invitation in the mail? It is April 20 at Bellerive Country Club, 11:30 a.m, $40/person. Remember to RSVP as soon as possible to save your spot at priory.org/MCLuncheon. Call a few friends and get a table together – the more the merrier!

The Alumni Mothers’ Club Lenten Series was very enlightening and nourished our souls. A special thanks to Barb Finnegan for organizing the four sessions of Lenten Series and sharing her faith to help us “Become the Best Version of Ourselves!” We are all a work in progress, some days are better than others, but each day is a special gift from God. There was a good representation of Alumni Mothers that attended the Lenten Series.

fr laurenceThere was even some time to help Father Laurence celebrate his birthday at the Lenten Series. Birthdays are special and should always be remembered no matter where or when they occur. Thank God for Father Laurence, his vocation and his guidance with the works of the Alumni Mothers’ Club!

Please keep the Priory Senior Class of 2016 and their families in your prayers. Final decisions are being made for their college choice for the Fall. The boys’ Senior Class Retreat was held Tuesday-Thursday, April 5-7. Their final retreat as Priory students solidifies the bonds they have formed over the past six years at Priory. It is always a special retreat for them.

The Senior Moms’ Retreat is scheduled for May 4, 2016. Father Gregory, Father Michael, and Audrey Altepeter will be sharing words of wisdom to the mothers. For the Senior Moms’ Retreat in 2011, Dr. Marianne Brady shared her great words of wisdom with the mothers. One point that Marianne made that became a part of my psyche, paraphrased was “You want your son to be happy!” It is their decision; it is their life. A hard lesson for all of us to learn.

In the past, I have collect “Words of Wisdom” from the alumni mothers to share with the Senior Moms. Do you have any special words you would like to share with the Senior Moms that helped you when your son transitioned to college? Any funny thoughts, practical advice and/or “Words of Wisdom” you would like to share with the newest members about to join the AMC? Please send your “Words of Wisdom” to me at mmoenmc@gmail.com so I can share them with the Mothers of the Priory Class of 2016.

We are coming to the end of the school year, but planning is underway for the AMC Margarita Party on Friday, June 3, 2016! Kate Raybuck is busy coordinating a wonderful Fiesta! Father Francis will again be at the helm of the Ninja making his world famous margaritas! It is a great kick-off to summer and a wonderful time to catch up with Priory friends. There will be a special addition to the court yard garden at the Switzer House for the event!

Thank you all again for your continued prayers and support!  In Father Stanger’s Easter Homily at Holy Infant, he stated, “God is Pure Love!” And what is important in life is, “Not how many minutes we have lived, but how many minutes we have loved!”

God’s Love to all of you,

Michelle Moen

AMC Newsletter March 2016

March 2016

Message from the President

Dear Priory Moms,

Last Thursday, my husband hit a skunk on the way home from work. Within less than five minutes, not only the exterior of his car, but his clothes, wallet and everything in and around the car were pungent with the skunk’s perfume! Our computer took its final crash and died and our refrigerator was not cooling. All of this minutes before we were leaving to go out for the night, just the two of us.

AMC Lenten RetreatLife has many bumps in the road and it is our choice how we choose to respond to them. A week prior, I may have said a few unpleasant words and complained endlessly, but this week was different. I was blessed to have attended the AMC Lenten Retreat lead by Barb Finnegan. The video, the talks and discussion left me with a new attitude – to be more grateful for what God has given me. The beauty of our Church calendar provides us with an annual opportunity, especially during Lent, to “reboot” and to clean out the rubbish that enters our hearts and life during our journey through life.

I left the Lenten Retreat with a lighter heart and attitude which allowed me to laugh instead of cry when confronted with the skunk, the computer and the refrigerator! Barb lead a wonderful Lenten Retreat session and there still are two sessions left! The details are below in the newsletter. You do not have to attend them all, just one will do as I found out.

AMC booksFather Cassian Koenemann ‘97, son of alumni mother, Dianne Koenemann, joined Barb as a guest speaker on contemplative prayer for the second series of the Lenten Retreat. He provided the group with the rich array of Church history on contemplative prayer along with an extensive list of “good reads and references” on the subject. We are so blessed with the great spiritual minds of all of our Monks!

As a mother, we never stop mothering no matter what the age of our children. For those of you who do not know me, my husband Lee and I, have five sons. Alec ‘08, Brett ’11, Andrew ’16, Sean ’20 and Michael ’21. Thus, I am an alumni mom, a current mom and grandma to Joseph (21 months) and Leo (3 months).

The Senior “Mom Prom” was held the last weekend in February: however, my son, Andrew, did not want to attend! With my older two sons, I would have made them attend, but as a more seasoned mom it was time for me to respect Andrew’s wishes and allow him to make his own choices for his life. My attendance was not important, but as a mom you don’t want your child to miss out on a special senior event with his classmates. God had a bigger plan. Andrew was asked to a dance for the same night with his peers. A repeated life lesson for me - God is in Control!

paint partyBelow is the invitation to the AMC Painting Party for April 7, 2016. Please RSVP soon as there are only 35 openings for this event. No previous painting experience required besides finger painting. The painting is beautiful and it will be so fun to create a masterpiece with friends! My cousin, Jean Geitz, is a very talented artist, but an even more patient teacher.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 20, 2016 for the Mothers’ Club Spring Luncheon at Bellerive Country Club. Your invitation should be arriving in the mail soon.

A special thanks to the Audrey Altepeter, Kathleen Dixon, Sarah Dow and Jane Sehnert for saying the Rosary after Mass for First Friday Devotion. If you can’t join us next month after Mass, you can say your Rosary at home for the intentions of the Abbey family.

Again, I would like to thank all of you who have contributed to the works of the Alumni Mothers’ Club through your annual dues and your service by volunteering for events sponsored by the AMC! Even if you cannot physically volunteer, your prayers and support are what holds our group together! Without you, AMC would not be able to foster the relationships developed over the years through Priory and the whole Abbey family.

Come last Monday, Lee and I managed to get most of the odor out of his car, the computer was replaced and the refrigerator was once again cooling. Life is good! Just as we must clean and address issues in our physical environment, we must also conduct a spiritual inventory of the clutter and obstacles that permeate our soul. There is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday. Thank you, God, for your infinite Mercy on our Lenten journey as we cleanse and renew our hearts and minds with your infinite Love! Wishing you and yours a very Blessed Easter!

God bless,

Michelle Moen

Jeanine Hagen

It is with great sadness we say farewell to Jeanine Hagen, alumni mother of Garrett ’83 (deceased), Alan ’84, mother of fellow alumni mother, Lucy Jochens and grandmother of Peter Jochens ’11, and George Jochens ’15. Mrs. Hagen passed away on February 10, 2016. She was very active with Mothers Club and Xanadu were she used her secretarial skills to type the Xanadu Auction Catalogs for many years, not only for Saint Louis Priory School, but for Saint Louis University High School and Visitation Academy. Mrs. Hagen transitioned from typing the auction catalog on a typewriter to typing it on a computer. We are so indebted to the works of Mrs. Hagen for creating the template for the Xanadu Auction Catalog! Please pray for the repose of her soul and keep her family in your prayers.

Betty Singer

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Betty Singer, alumni mother of David ’78 and Jonathan ’80. Mrs. Singer passed away on February 9, 2016 in Kew Gardens, New York. Please pray for the repose of her soul and keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Abbot Patrick Barry, O.S.B.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Abbot Patrick Barry, O.S.B. who passed away on February 21, 2016 at Ampleforth Abbey at the age of 98. Message from the President

Dear Alumni Moms,

It couldn’t have been a more perfect day for a garden party!  Xanadu Chair Karen Monette, the Section Chairs, Mothers’ Club President Geeta Swaminathan, the Development Office (Mary Rhodes, Emily Kuryla, Dawn Szatkowski and Ann Bender), along with Mothers’ Club and Alumni Mothers’ Club volunteers hosted a beautiful Garden Party for Xanadu 2016.  The spirit of giving lives on from the first Xanadu held in 1970 Chaired by Claire Travis and Anne Ryan to the 47th Xanadu 2016: Garden Party.

Father Gregory welcomed a special guest, mother of twelve and Priory alumni mother of eight, Gracie Reynolds.  Gracie has attended all 47 Xanadu Auctions!  How Xanadu has changed from the very first Xanadu to this past weekend’s auction, which featured a Preview Party on Friday evening followed by Xanadu on Saturday night.  The Corley Gym and the multipurpose gym were transformed into a fabulous Garden Party.  I love hearing the stories of past Xanadus.  Father Dominic recalled when the entire event was held in the Corley Gym with bidding on overhead projectors.  To think we now bid using our mobile phones!

Ann DimitroffAnn Dimitroff chaired Chic Boutique again this year and created a lovely section filled with many treasures.  The alumni mothers take great pride in our little corner of Xanadu.  A special thanks to the alumni moms who supported Xanadu through your donations.  Thanks also to those who helped with Xanadu 2016—Marian Ahlering, Audrey Altepeter, Denise Bertrand, Janet Ciapciak, Sue Cogan, Annette Croghan, Sarah Dow, Mary Dowling, Julie Dubray, Mindy Finan, Joyce Finneran, Kristina Hanley, June Herman, Jean Hively, Claudia Jones, Gai Lowell, Cheryl McAleenan, Kate Raybuck, Stacy Sabino, Jill Trout, Laura Vaporean and Judy Wagner.  Many past Xanadu Chairs — Janine DiMarco, Kim Kuchan, Susan McCusker, Sheila Michalski, Lyz Miskovsky, Rhonda Wehking, and Liz Wilmsen — were in attendance.  It is a wonderful gathering place for us to remember past Xanadu auctions and to foster new friendships and rekindle ones that were formed during past auctions.

alumni moms at xanaduWhen I was Mothers’ Club President, there was great discussion about changing the organization of Xanadu.  It has always been the Mothers’ Club’s greatest service project for the school and has generated thousands of dollars for Priory, its students and the tuition assistance program.  During a meeting with Father Abbot, he stated, “Xanadu is about building relationships!”  Those relationships last a lifetime through our common bonds – Saint Louis Priory School, Saint Louis Abbey, the monks, the boys, the alumni, and, yes, the parents.  We are the Priory family which continues to grow and be strengthened by the traditions of those who have gone before us.

chic boutiqueIf you haven’t been to Xanadu in recent years, please consider attending next year.  The Preview Party on Friday evening is very casual and wonderful for mingling with old friends, checking out the auction items and renewing relationships.  And, of course, Xanadu is always a beautiful gala filled with the positive support of our guests and the excitement of the Live Auction.

As the chair of the Diamond Necklace Raffle, it was so nice to see so many of you at the Preview party and Xanadu.  David Holmes ’16 (Judy Holmes) sold the winning raffle ticket at Xanadu to Alumni Mother Janet Ciapciak!  It couldn’t have gone to a nicer mother!

A special thanks to Alumni Mother, Sarah Dow, who helped create the Fund-a-Need video for student gathering areas.  Her video inspiration for the need to update the boys’ lounge areas inspired many to give generously to Fund-a-Need.  And to all of you who gave of your time, talents and treasures for the success of yet another Xanadu, thank you!

From the celebration of Xanadu, we enter the penitential season of Lent.  We are blessed to have the Mothers’ Club Morning of Recollection on Ash Wednesday and the AMC Lenten Series, a four-week series presented by Barb Finnegan with the theme “The Best Version of Yourself.”  I am a constant work in progress and very much appreciate the wisdom of the Church, which annually calls us to turn from sin to renew and deepen our relationship with God.  And of course, the Mothers’ Club and AMC are here for us by providing special spiritual opportunities to grow in our faith.  And don’t forget the many Lectio groups we are blessed to have on campus.

Please mark your calendars for April 7 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for our first AMC “Priory Painters” Party open to all who have a secret desire to bring out the Picasso in them.  It will be held in the Junior School Art Studio.  My cousin, Jean Geitz, will share her artistic talents to help us uncover our hidden talents.  It will be a creative evening to promote the Arts with friends, along with a little vino, appetizers and lots of laughs!  An invitation will be sent out soon with sign-up information.

Thank you again for all of your continued support for the works of AMC!  Without you, none of this would be possible!  Have a renewing Lenten Season.

Message from the President

Dear Priory Alumni Mothers,

The Monks enjoyed the Thanksgiving Feast we provided for them. We supplied three turkeys with all of the trimmings for the 38 guests gathered at their Thanksgiving table. The Monks were so thankful for all who contributed to their feast! It was a delight to work with Brother Joseph ‘09 (son of Alumni Mother, Sarah Igoe) to arrange the feast!

Switzer treeIf you haven’t been to the Switzer House in a while, stop in to see it decorated for Christmas. A special thanks to Dr. Suzanne Miller (Ben Noll ‘00) who helped me put up three Christmas trees and deck the halls! We had lots of fun and laughs and even witnessed a miracle as we duct taped the Christmas tree in the photo to bring it back to life!

The Mothers’ Club once again hosted a lovely Christmas Boutique. The decorations were beautiful, the lunch was delicious, Mr. Marting and the Priory Choir provided beautiful Christmas Carols and the shopping was great with a variety of vendors. But most of all, it was wonderful to see the Priory Moms gathered together to catch up on the latest happenings in their lives. This is one of our best attended events with alumni moms, current moms, family and friends. A special thanks again to Dr. Suzanne Miller, who helped sell Xanadu Raffle Tickets for the Diamond Cross Necklace at the Christmas Boutique.

If you missed the Christmas Boutique, please join us for the Monks’ Christmas Open House this Sunday, Dec. 13. The Alumni Mothers’ Club provides hospitality support for this event and we are in need of baked Christmas goodies. If you don’t bake but have an hour or two to spare, please join us to decorate, serve and/or clean up.

It is hard to believe that Christmas is almost here. As we busy ourselves with the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations, we need to step back and quietly await the celebration of the birth of Our Infant Savior. It is a time to quietly reflect on the love of God for us and to spend time with our family and all of the special people in our lives.

Wishing you and yours a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year,

Updating Alumni Mothers’ Club Contact Information

We need to update our contact information for AMC. If you or your son(s) have had a change in your phone number, address and or email address, please contact Ann Bender, Gift & Database Coordinator of Saint Louis Priory/Saint Louis Abbey at (314) 434-3690 ext. 326 or abender@priory.org to inform her of the changes. We want to make sure we have accurate contact information.

If you know of a friend who is not receiving AMC correspondence, please forward this to her. We are attempting to email AMC correspondence through Class Representatives, but need to update the emails to ensure we can successfully reach everyone. Please update your personal contact information and the personal contact information of your son(s). Thank you for your assistance with this, all of you are very important to the AMC and we want to keep in touch!

"What's New" Section of the Alumni Mothers’ Club Website

In the busy world we live in today, it is so easy to lose touch with friends. The AMC would like to start a “What’s New” section on our website. First of all, we need a fun and catchy name for it. If you have any suggestions or you are interested in working on this, please contact Michelle Moen at mmoenmc@gmail.com.

This would be a wonderful way for the AMC members and the alumni to share updates in their lives. It can be designed for our specific needs and interests. It could include: a new job, the birth of a new grandchild, the wedding of an alumni, special photos of events or travels, etc.

Alec and Leo Moen

My personal addition to the “What’s New” section is the birth of our second grandson, Leo Wojtyla. Leo was welcomed into the world by his proud parents, Alec ’08 and Mary Frances “Frannie” Moen along with big brother, Joseph. There is always room for another boy in our family!

Message from the President

Dear Priory Alumni Mothers,

With the change in the season, comes a change in the Alumni Mothers’ Club (AMC) Executive Board. Pattie Schafer recently stepped down as the Alumni Mothers’ Club President, and I am very honored and humbled to now serve the Alumni Mothers’ Club Board President.  We thank Pattie for her service on the Alumni Mothers’ Club Executive Board, and for her vision to increase the active participation of the Alumni Mothers which will be an ongoing goal.

We were so blessed to begin our new AMC year with the Ordination Mass of three new priests for Saint Louis Abbey - Father Aidan McDermott, Father Cuthbert Elliott ‘02 and Father John McCusker ‘01!  Father John is son of Alumni Mother Sue McCusker and Father Cuthbert is the son of Alumni Mother Deborah Elliott.  The AMC hosted a beautiful reception, chaired by Julia Masetti (Victor ‘13) who went above and beyond to make the reception fitting for such a blessed event at the Saint Louis Abbey!

AMC GGPA special thanks to Alumni Mom Jean Hively (Tucker ‘14), for another spectacular Xanadu Gift Gathering Party this year at Schneithorst’s Rooftop Garden!  It was a perfect evening – the venue, the company, the delicious food and the weather, all for the benefit of Xanadu, but ultimately for Saint Louis Priory School.  AMC’s support of Xanadu does not stop when our sons graduate from Priory; we continue to play an active role with Chic Boutique, our own little corner of Xanadu, and through our support and donations to Xanadu.

In October, we sponsored our fabulous Fall Luncheon and Mass with Alumni Mom Teri Griege (Kyle ’07) sharing her inspirational personal battle with colon cancer.  A special thanks to Pattie Schafer (Patrick ’13) for securing our guest speaker and to Angie Sevastianos (Aris ’15) for chairing this beautiful and inspiring event!  The Priory website has more about the AMC Fall Luncheon.

Again with the help of Julia Masetti (Victor ’13), the AMC hosted the reception for the Monks’ Open House on Oct. 18.  Besides cookies from Brother Dunstan, breads from Brother Francis, salmon and soda bread from Audrey Altepeter, Julia created a wonderful array of cheeses, breads, pastries and goodies for all of the guests.  The true Spirit of Benedictine Hospitality is alive at Saint Louis Abbey!

There was time for a little fun putting together the Alumni Mothers' Club Halloween Care Packages for the Priory Class of 2015.  A special thanks to Kristina Hanley (Steven ’13 and Joseph ’15) for organizing Care Packages of Halloween sweets and treats for the recent graduates.  I am sure they loved receiving their goodies!

It is now time to focus on the Thanksgiving Dinner which the AMC provides for the Monks.  Brother Joseph ‘09 (son of Alumni Mother Sarah Igoe) is the Monk in charge of the kitchen this year.  How wonderful to see so many of our Priory graduates a part of the Saint Louis Abbey!

AMC flowers

Please mark your calendars and join us to decorate the Switzer House for Christmas on Nov. 30, followed by the Christmas Boutique on Dec. 2, First Friday Rosary Devotion on Dec. 4 and the Monks’ Mass and Christmas Open House on Dec. 13.   Four fun and spiritual events to get us all in the Spirit of Christmas and to bring the Priory family together!

As you see, there is so much going on with the AMC as we carry out our mission to support the Alumni Mothers, the Monks with their Monastic Receptions and the Switzer House.  If you have been away for a while, please join us at the next event.  Our bonds to the Priory family are forever and your presence makes are bonds even stronger!

May God continue to bless you, your family and our Priory family!

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, Continue to be Our Role Model Now and Forever! Amen

May has arrived with the quick passage of time. My year as AMC President is drawing to a close. My thanks to Father Laurence and the monks for their prayerful support. The AMC Board, comprised of a wonderful group of women, the Priory Development Office and Communications Department all helped to bring activities to you. I was able to complete a few, but not all, of my goals and your suggestions this year. I look forward to being an active member of the AMC for many years to come.

I will be passing the torch to Pattie Schafer, our next AMC President. She is already hard at work selecting a Board and formulating ideas for 2015-16. We all should appreciate and support her efforts.

AMC mother/grandmother, Mrs. Trudy Barry, has passed away. She was the wife of Mr. Brian Barry, long time faculty member at Saint Louis Priory School. May she rest peacefully with Our Lord. We send our prayers and condolences to her family and friends.

Please continue reading for activity and event updates.

New AMC College Care Package Tradition

Marian Ahlering and I welcomed a lively group of 2014 graduate mothers in April. We filled envelopes with a note from the AMC, prayer card and Priory traditional Starburst candy to send the recent alums as they prepare for final exams. Almost all the parents provided college addresses for this new final exam care package tradition. Afterward, food, drink and good conversation were enjoyed by everyone. Thanks to all who participated.

Switzer House Walk Through

We have completed the Walk Through (4/13) and developed a list of decorating ideas for the Switzer House. Upon approval, we will proceed with a plan to accomplish these ideas. My thanks to those sharing their expertise: Judy Krewet, Carol Less, Pattie Schafer and especially Ann Dimitroff for her kind furniture and accessory donations from her resale shop. Stop by to see the new additions!

Mothers’ Club Spring Luncheon

I was happy to see so many alumni mothers at the Mothers’ Club Spring Luncheon (4/22). We were treated to the beautiful voices of the senior choir under the direction of Mr. Mark Marting. Saks Fifth Avenue representatives presented the history of purses by designer Coco Chanel. The real afternoon highlight was the presentation of the Xanadu check by Xanadu 2015 Chair Kim Kuchan to Abbot Thomas totaling $495,000. Many thanks once again to Kim and her committee chairs for all of their hard work on the Xanadu auction! Saint Louis Priory School continues to benefit from this special tradition.

AMC Continental Breakfast

The final AMC Continental Breakfast was held Friday, April 24 after the All-School Mass. Abbot Thomas, Father Timothy and Father Laurence were in attendance. It was very nice to see a larger group of alumni mothers reconnecting and sharing news with each other. Representatives from the Development and Communication Offices joined the occasion. The continental breakfasts will start up again in the fall.

AMC Lenten Spirituality Series

Sarah Igoe, chair of the Lenten Spirituality Series, kindly donated the DVD and workbook Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues by Father Robert Barron to the AMC. You are so kind! I failed to mention this in the April Newsletter. If you are interested in borrowing this series, please let me know. Father Barron presents thought-provoking information. EASTER BLESSINGS OF THE RISEN LORD TO ONE AND ALL!

I am sure springtime blossoms provided a beautiful backdrop as family and friends gathered to celebrate Easter. Hopefully, your gatherings were a peaceful respite from hectic schedules.

Many thanks to Emily Kuryla, Director of Development, for providing an update on Priory’s future during the Brown Bag Lunch “Meet and Greet” last month. It was wonderful seeing mothers from the Junior School and High School and Alumni mothers gather on a beautiful day in the Switzer House sunroom. Lots of good conversation filled the air. Best wishes to Emily and her husband, Ryan, as they await the birth of their first child!

AMC mothers Patty Erker and Barbara O’Halloran, both Master Gardeners, are helping us with Switzer House landscaping plans. Pattie Schafer and I are most grateful. Thanks to Jeanne Cody and Martin Fitzgerald and his staff for assisting with garden clean up.

Our condolences and prayers to the family and friends of the following alumni mothers/grandmothers who have passed away: Mrs. Karen Guth, Mrs. Adele “Johnnie” Bender and Mrs. Katherine O’Donnell. May their souls rest peacefully with our Lord.

New AMC Tradition

AMC mom Marian Ahlering approached me with an idea to support the newest Priory graduates who are off on their first year at college.  This project has two goals:  first, to gather the newest AMC moms for a kind of reunion at the Switzer House; and, second, to remind the boys that Priory and their families wish them the best as they complete their Freshman year.  Marian will provide more information as the project develops.  We will provide financial aid for this project.

Switzer House Walk Through & Decorating

AMC moms Julie Krewet and Carole Less, both interior decorators, have accepted my invitation to provide guidance and resources/ sources for Switzer House projects. Those include repairing and reupholstering the dining room chairs and updating the entry bathroom and closet. Several years ago, Julie and Carole helped with the reupholstering of various pieces of Switzer House living room furniture.

The Switzer House decorating committee looks forward to working with both of you. Thank you for letting us know about your talents on our AMC forms.

We will be scheduling another walk through to develop our plans in order to accomplish our goals.

I would also like to thank AMC mom Shirley Spillane for sharing information regarding how she gathered resources to redecorate the Switzer House entry bathroom in the 1980’s. Julie Constantino, Director of Development at the time, assisted Shirley with this task.

Switzer House Gardening Sessions

Spring is right around the corner and it is time to get the Switzer House garden cleaned up and ready for planting new shrubs.

Monday, March 23 – 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 25 – 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Bring your gardening gloves and labeled gardening tools.

Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Many thanks to Mr. Martin Fitzgerald, Director of Facilities, and his staff for helping the AMC accomplish so many outdoor landscaping goals.

AMC mom Barbara O’Halloran, former Master Gardener with the Botanical Garden, has accepted my invitation to share her horticultural knowledge for this project. Our gardening committee looks forward to working with you. Thank you for letting us know about your talent on our AMC forms.

Switzer House Basement

As I mentioned earlier, Phase I of reorganizing the Switzer House basement is in full swing! Additional labeled, clear “critter proof” plastic storage containers and the removal of clutter/cardboard boxes have already made the area more functional. We will continue with this project on the dates and times listed below. Join us if you can.

Monday, March 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Wednesday, March 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Monday, March 30 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

AMC Continental Breakfast

Friday, March 27, 2015

AMC mothers are invited to attend the last 8:15 a.m. All-School Mass of the month. Following Mass we will gather at Switzer House to enjoy a homemade Continental breakfast. If you can’t attend Mass, please join us for breakfast around 9:00 a.m. R.S.V.P. to your Evite invitation.

Our February breakfast was enjoyed by several alumni mothers. We were joined by Emily Kuryla, Director of Development, Ann Bender, Gift and Database Coordinator and AMC mom Mary Rhodes, Xanadu and Volunteer Coordinator. Good food and wonderful conversation was shared by all present. I hope you can join us at the end of this month.

February 2014

Happy New Year AMC Members!

Blessings to everyone as we continue our journey into the New Year.

I hope that you and your families and friends enjoyed reconnecting during the holidays. Special thanks to Michelle Moen and Erin Smelcer for helping me decorate the Switzer House in December. Erin was kind enough to share a variety of angels and santas from her holiday collection. The house looked very festive for work and social gatherings.

Please read the complete newsletter and mark your calendars for upcoming events, activities and projects. Join with friends and RSVP to participate. It is always fun to catch up with other alumni moms.

I would like to pass along the news that the following alumni mothers/grandmothers have passed away: Mrs. Mary Catherine Jones, Mrs. Elizabeth Ahlering and Mrs. Orlean McAuliffe. May their souls rest peacefully with Our Lord. Our condolences and prayers for their families and friends.

Alumni Mothers' Club Newsletter
December 2014

Holiday greetings to one and all!

We begin the season of Advent with great anticipation for the birth of our Savior.  May our hearts be ready and filled with the ultimate gift of His love.  In November, the Xanadu Monk Underwriting Party was enjoyed by the monks and guests alike.  Thank you Janine DiMarco and Margy Travers for your vision and planning for this special evening.  Remember you can still make a donation to underwrite a monk package at Xanadu or donate to a Xanadu section.  The deadline for Xanadu donations is January 7th.

A word of thanks to all the Alumni mothers who have mailed in their dues donation and completed forms.  It is wonderful seeing the survey responses and adding new and returning volunteers for a variety of AMC events and projects.  Your support is sincerely appreciated.

We have a busy December and New Year ahead of us.  Please check out the upcoming events and activities below.  Stay tuned for future newsletters for news on events which are in the planning stages!

Greetings Priory Alumni Mothers!

May the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit give us strength as we enter this very hectic time of year.  I would like to thank Jean Hively for hosting the Chic Boutique Gift Gathering Party benefitting Xanadu at Café Provençal in October.  Beautiful weather, tasty food and drink and friendly conversation contributed to this very successful evening.  The gardening project began this fall around the Switzer House.  AMC volunteers and Martin Fitzgerald’s Facilities crew have helped us check off many tasks from our gardening project list.

Many thanks to the Alumni moms who have updated their contact information and completed their Volunteer and Survey sheets with their dues donations.  For those who have not, please mail in your forms and dues ($35) payable to “Saint Louis Priory,” noting “AMC Dues” in the Memo line, and return to the Priory Development Office, 500 South Mason Road, St. Louis, MO  63141.  You may add $5 to help defray the cost of the Monks’ Thanksgiving Dinner.  Thank you for sharing your time, talents, treasure and ideas to support your Alumni Mothers’ Club.

Alumni Mothers' Club Newsletter
September 2014

Greetings Priory Alumni Mothers!

Thursday, September 25th was a special evening for the Alumni mothers who attended our Rosary, Mass and Fall Dinner. Father Francis devoted his homily to each mother who entrusted her son to Saint Louis Priory School. Our families and deceased mothers were remembered during petitions. We thank Abbot Thomas and the monastic community for sharing this time with us. A delicious dinner and a beautiful reflection by guest speaker, Diana Hartnett, capped off this enjoyable social event.

You will soon receive the AMC Welcome packet.  By completing and returning the survey, your volunteer sign up form and dues donation, we can look forward to an active year in community. Please look over upcoming events in this newsletter.

The AMC Board and I will be planning a variety of other social and spiritual activities. Please check the Priory website frequently for upcoming AMC events and activities.  Our goal is to increase the participation of so many wonderful alumni mothers through these gatherings.

Get involved with your club. As we infuse new ideas into the AMC, it will be filled with vitality. Thank you for sharing your gift of time, talent and treasure!
