Mission Statement: The Sodality of Our Lady is a religious body which aims at fostering in its members an ardent devotion, reverence, and filial love towards the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through this devotion, and with the protection of so good a Mother, it seeks to make the faithful gathered together under her name good Catholics, sincerely bent on sanctifying themselves, each in his state of life, and zealous, as far as their condition in life permits, to save and sanctify their neighbor, and to defend the Church of Jesus Christ against the attacks of the wicked.
According to Brother Dunstan, Sodalities of the Blessed Virgin go back to the 16th century when a young Belgian scholastic assembled his students to practice devotions in honor our Lady. Brother Dunstan wanted to establish a student organization at Priory dedicated to the Blessed Mother, and the Saint Louis Priory Sodality is dedicated in particular to Our Lady of Walsingham.
The devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham is important to our heritage as an English Benedictine school. The title derives from a vision in the 11th century to an Ango-Saxon woman named Richeldis de Faverches. The shrine became a popular place of pilgrimage until the Reformation. The shrine was reopened in the 20th century. All the new inductees of the Saint Louis Priory receive the medieval pilgrim badge of Our Lady of Walsingham.
The Saint Louis Priory Sodality is open to all students from grades 7-12. They meet every Wednesday before school in the cafeteria, where they recite the chaplet of the Virtues of the Blessed Mother. After a reading from the Saint Louis Priory Sodality Rule, Brother Dunstan or one of the students gives a reflection on the reading or on some aspect of Marian devotion. After the intercessions, the prayer service closes with the hymn to Our Lady of Walsingham. On the last Wednesday of the month, the Sodality also meets for lunch and has a guest speaker during dessert. Brother Dunstan bakes for all the meetings, and on special feast days there are celebratory breakfasts. In addition, there is an annual Christmastide retreat at Apple Hill.
The Sodality would like to invite any interested students to join us in the cafeteria on Wednesday mornings at 7:45. If you have any questions, see Brother Dunstan, one of the officers or any of our members.
