A Message from Father Gregory at the Beginning of Lent
Again we keep this solemn fast,
A gift of faith from ages past,
This Lent which binds us lovingly
To faith and hope and charity.
These words from an ancient hymn by Saint Gregory the Great invite us to consider the great opportunity which Lent affords each of us in our spiritual journey. Lent is a gift that enables us to focus in a particularly strong way on growing in faith, hope and charity, through undertaking specific practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is for this reason that Saint Benedict speaks of Lent as a time when we may offer to God our observances “with the joy of the Holy Spirit” and look forward to Easter “with the joy of spiritual desire.”
May your Lent be joyful and spiritually rewarding!
