Message from the Assistant Headmaster, 9/9/16
The 2016-17 school year is in full swing.
I’m always amazed at how quickly, not to mention with what intensity, our entire community brings in each new academic year. A campus visitor would find it hard to believe that we have only ‘officially’ been in session for just over two weeks. A quick glance at our school calendar, however, would reveal that since the first day of classes on August 24, we have competed in over 15 High School athletic competitions, gathered together for six Form coffees, hosted a Form VI College night, a Form III Parent Night, and a Form I Back-to-School night, participated in three school Masses, and celebrated the diaconate ordination of two of our Benedictine monks. All of this, of course, while our students and faculty have completed twelve full days in our academic calendar, adjusting to their new class schedules and laying the groundwork for what will hopefully be a successful year of study. I appreciate the dedication that everyone has shown to help us realize Priory’s mission of providing a Benedictine, Catholic, college preparatory education of the highest excellence so as to help talented and motivated young men develop their full potential as children of God.
In addition to providing up-to-date information regarding important school communications, with each edition of the Rebel News we hope to highlight the numerous and varied achievements of our students, faculty and alumni. As I mentioned in my remarks at Rebel Round-Up, these achievements are often the result of both the ambitions and aspirations of the many talented members of our school community. I encourage everyone to take some time to read through the featured stories that celebrate the central tenets of our mission: Benedictine, Catholic, College Preparatory and Community. I also encourage you reach out to our Communications Office with any stories you believe might also speak to these same tenets and thus further promote the values inherent in our mission.
If you’ve been on campus at any point during the school day, you’ve hopefully had the opportunity to see how our students have utilized the new gathering spaces that were made possible by the generous support of last year’s Xanadu Fund-A-Need. Every new space is in use at various times throughout the school day. The intention behind developing these areas on campus was two-fold: first, to allow our students appropriate space to work collaboratively (with each other or with faculty) and independently on out-of-class assignments and, second, to give them more options for gathering before school, during a free or X-period, or at the end of the day to simply hang out and enjoy a little down time amidst the demands of our rigorous program of study. The new, shared Senior/Faculty lounge is perhaps the best example of how these spaces are being used to foster a greater sense of community among those on campus. Our hope is that we continue to further develop the campus environment so as to allow for various types of sharing and collaboration and encourage more active participation in the life of the school. Our continued physical plant improvements are a very real manifestation of Priory’s powerful sense of community.
I wish everyone a good weekend.
