"IN EVERY CORNER SING!"
THE SAINT LOUIS CHAMBER CHORUS
SECOND CONCERT OF THE 60TH SEASON -
PHILIP BARNES, Artistic Director
At the St. Louis Abbey Church
Sunday, Nov. 8 - 3 P.M.
The Diamond Jubilee season of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus continues with a program titled "In Every Corner Sing!"The concert will explore music designed to reverberate in a large space. It will also feature many works scored for multiple choirs, thus exploiting the rich acoustic of the St. Louis Abbey Church.
Two highlights of this program are sure to please the audience. First, the 40-part "Spem In Alium" by Thomas Tallis will be performed for just the fourth time ever in St. Louis (once before by the Chamber Chorus). This piece calls for eight separate choirs of five voice parts each, and is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Renaissance music. And, as does each concert in the 60th season, this one will present a world premiere. The Chorus will sing a new work commissioned for it from Gabriel Jackson, Associate Composer of the BBC Singers.
As noted above, this program abounds with music written for multiple choirs. Benjamin Britten's "Hymn to the Virgin" features a full choir echoed by a semi-chorus on the other side of the church. The Chamber Chorus will also sing a rarely performed work for three choirs, "O Praise the Lord of Heaven," a psalm setting by Ralph Vaughan Williams. And if that weren't enough, the audience will be treated to a piece for five choirs intended to be sung "in the round," Knut Nystedt's arrangement of a chorale titled "Immortal Bach."
