Priory Moms Gather For Fall Luncheon
On October 14, Priory mothers gathered in the Abbey Church for Mass before heading to the Dining Hall for the annual Mothers’ Club Fall Luncheon. It was a beautiful fall day, and laughter filled the Dining Hall before everyone settled down for a welcome by Mothers’ Club President Geeta Swaminathan. Father Gregory led the group in prayer, and Xanadu 2016 Chair Karen Monette spoke about the gift gathering parties, the upcoming Trivia Night, and December’s Christmas Boutique. She introduced Mary Catherine Gallagher (actually Leeker) to talk about Trivia Night. Mary Catherine’s impersonation of the Saturday Night Live Molly Shannon character brought lots of laughter. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch that included butternut squash soup, mixed green salad with goat cheese, chicken kabobs, tender beef sandwiches, and couscous. As lunch wound down, Geeta introduced the guest speaker: Dr. Rob Furey, Priory’s school counselor. Dr. Furey, with his usual grace and humor, spoke about the difficulties of raising children when other parents make less than desirable decisions with their own kids. He also talked about “bully parents,” citing statistics that show ½ of all new teachers leave the profession after three years, and 46% after five because of parents. Finally, Dr. Furey left the group with three take-aways:
- Get support (don’t parent alone)
- The two most common parenting mistakes are not being able to say no, and not being able to say yes. Moderation is key. Adolescent children are not yet ready for complete freedom, and yet they must be encouraged to become more independent in order to be prepared for college and life after.
- Seize every opportunity to become a better parent. Take time to educate yourself on parenting, especially since other parents won’t.
- Be a strong, humble parent.
Many thanks to everyone who helped make the Mothers’ Club Fall Luncheon a success. We hope everyone had a great time!
