YMCA Youth In Government Recap
Congratulations to sophomores Joey M. and Ian R., who just returned from the YMCA Youth in Government program in Jefferson City. Priory mom Mrs. M, who accompanied the boys to the capital, reports: "The boys had a GREAT time and learned a whole lot. Both of the boys authored bills that they argued in committee on Thursday evening. Joey's bill was selected by the youth Speaker to be presented on the House Floor on Friday morning. His bill did not pass, but it was a tough one to get by a group of just over 150 high school students (conceal and carry on public colleges to help reduce mass shootings and deaths by mass shootings). It passed out of committee, and he did a great job arguing it both in committee and on the House floor. Ian's bill lowered the voting age to 16 for state elections. He also did a good job presenting his bill in committee and it passed, but did not get to the full house.
At the end there is a banquet and award ceremony. The advisors from Viz, SLUH, Rockwood Summit, Kirkwood, Clopton, St. Joe's, Mexico, and Francis Howell selected three of the legislators out of over 150 for Outstanding Statesperson awards, and Joey received one."
